MP3 of My First Chapter Now Available

I am pleased to announce that I just completed my first ever author reading of a chapter from my Gods Among Men series.  That is to say, I recorded myself reading  aloud the first chapter in book one, At the Lady’s Behest Comes….  I then scoured the web for sound effects and music which I added to the audio file to give the reading more flavor.

Both the chapter, entitled The Wizard’s Spells…, and the audio reading can be downloaded/listened to at http://gods-among-men.com/blog/books/book1.  The link to the MP3 file itself is http://gods-among-men.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Book1Chap1.mp3.

It took several days to create the reading and add all the sound effects.  I was surprised by how much fun it was to do, and how  beneficial the exercise proved to be.  Listening to my own reading in painstaking detail, looking for places where sound effects would be useful, forced me to notice minor problems that heretofore had escaped my notice.

I hope the final product is enjoyable, or at least interesting.  I plan to continue with this exercise, if only for my own enjoyment.  I expect that recording all the chapters which have been reviewed by the Magic City Writers’ Group will take approximately a month or so, with most of that time spent adding sound effects.  Any feedback or suggestions would be most appreciated, as always.

After I finish with the audio readings, I shall focus on polishing and finishing  my rough draft of the second book, …Demiurge, Unbound,….  I expect that will consume much of the coming year.  And, of course, I will continue trying to get the first book published.   It’s safe to say I have my work cut out for me.

New Chapters Are On The Site

I have recently posted what I expect will be the final versions of chapters one and two.  I have also posted the version of chapter three I am submitting to Alex, a friend who is helping me get these drafts into final form.   A near final version of chapter four is also on the site.  Chapter five will be reviewed by the Magic City Writer’s group on August 11th.   After I incorporate their suggestions I will post that chapter online as well.

I would go into more detail.  But I am tired and want to write a little on chapter six before going to bed.

Another New Version Of Chapter One

I have been away from writing for some time now.  The reasons aren’t important, suffice it to say I have been busy.  In recent weeks I have been able to return to the task of editing and writing and have made considerable progress.

Recently I entered into an editing arrangement with a friend from the Magic City Writers’ GroupHer name is Alex, I have know for several years now, and she wants to edit my work and give me feedback.  There is nothing more valuable to a writer, so I have taken her up on her kind offer.  We agreed that I would send her my chapters in one at a time, in the correct order, so she would be evaluating each one in its correct context.  We started with chapter one, which she returned to me a little over a week ago with numerous comments.  Her criticisms were substantial, constructive, and, most importantly, often correct.

I have incorporated her suggestions, and now repost chapter 1, The Wizard’s Spells…, in its latest incarnation.  You can find it at http://gods-among-men.com/blog/books/book1.

Alex is currently editing chapter 2, …Awakens the Outer Circle,….   I started editing it some months ago with the intent of posting on this site as a completed version.   The numerous distractions I faced since then kept me from finishing my edits, then I became obsessed with rewriting chapter 5, Through Persuasion and Force…, a substantial effort I finished last night.

I took enough time away from chapter 5 to finish the edits on chapter 2 so I could send it to Alex.  Once she returns chapter 2 with her edits, I shall incorporate them as fast as possible and post them on this site.

After that, I plan to post the chapters as I incorporate Alex’s latest edits.  With luck, I will post a chapter every 2-3 weeks, at least through chapter 5.

I am about to embark on a substantial rewrite of chapter 6, …Personal Lives are Upset…, which will take quite some time to complete.  After that comes the edit/rewrite of chapter 7, …And Critical Moments Relived …, which I expect to be hellish.  Either of these chapters may cause my posting schedule to slow.  Combined they are certain to bring my efforts to a crawl.

Another task I must look at is what the heck is going on with the template I’m using for the website.  The images are wrong and the menus look funky.  I upgraded the template a while back, so I’m guessing it threw out my old settings.  Which means I must wade back into the dashboard and figure out what I did before to make everything look correct.

Oh, joy.

A New Version Of Chapter One Is Now Available

I have posted a new version of The Wizard’s Spells…, a.k.a. chapter one of At The Lady’s Behest Comes…., the first book in the Gods Among Men series.

There are not a many changes, but there are some that are quite significant.  Most notably, I have begun weaving the importance of Tara Rihtwis into the first chapter.  In the process, I made slightly clearer what went wrong when Damon was casting his spell, and what agitated him so afterwards.

Both of these changes were made in response to my insight that I posted about in A Time to Rethink, namely that I need to sharpen the narrative so that the characters of Damon and Tara are front and center.  My goal is to make it clear from the very first chapter that the reader should focus on Damon and Tara as the story unfolds, that they are the crucial characters around which everyone and everything revolves.

You can download either a PDF or XPS version of the chapter at http://gods-among-men.com/blog/books/book1

I do not plan on revisiting this chapter again anytime soon.  Not because there isn’t room for improvement, but because it is time to move on and focus on other chapters that desperately need attention.  I am currently forcing myself to finish the final edit on chapter two.  Once done I shall post it online as well, and announce it in a blog post.

Take care and have fun.
